Sainsbury tightens security for top wines

Sainsbury supermarkets are trialling a new system to keep expensive wines safe from shoplifters as Britain is in the grip of a shoplifting epidemic.

Sainsbury's top wines are usually held behind locked glass doors and customers wishing to access them need to find a staff member to open the cabinet and let customers choose the wine. However, customers have been dissatisfied with traditional locked cabinets in-store – mainly due to having to wait for staff – and around 43% will not use them.

In response, Sainsbury is trialling a new system of cameras, AI and touch screen to go through a four step process to open the locked doors. This allows customers to serve themselves and also record and flag any suspicious activity.
