Decanter Awards announced

Decanter Wine Awards were released this week with some surprising high marks for smaller European wine regions.

As normal, France, with by far the most entries, were awarded the highest number of Platinum medals with 27 wines, followed by Italy on 18, Spain on 16 and Portugal on 13.

However, if you look at the the number of Golds and Platinums versus the number of entries for a country, you can see that Germany had 18% of its wines awarded a gold or platinum compared to France with just 5%.

In fact, when looking at the quality of entries rather than raw number of wines entered, the top five countries were Germany 18%, Hungary 12%,
and Turkey, Portugal and Austria all on 10%. The US came in 6th with 8% of entries gaining a Gold or Platinum medal.
