Waitrose uncorks new cork recycling scheme

Waitrose has launched a new cork recycling scheme in seven stores across the UK, making it the first major supermarket to introduce such an initiative. Customers can drop off their natural corks for recycling, which will be processed by Amorim, the world’s largest cork manufacturer, for repurposing.

Majestic Wines has been running a successful national cork recycling scheme since 2021, collecting over one million corks across its 200 stores in partnership with the Eden Project and the Portuguese Cork Association. The recycled corks are used as mulch to enrich soil and support sustainable gardening efforts.

Both initiatives highlight a growing trend among UK retailers to promote sustainable practices and reduce waste by turning used corks into eco-friendly products like mulch and household items, contributing to a circular economy strategy.
