Fake wine ring busted in France and Italy
Police in France and Italy have dismantled an international wine fraud operation selling low-quality wine as valuable vintages worth up to €15,000 each. Six suspects, including a Russian ringleader, were arrested. The gang is accused of creating counterfeit labels from renowned French vineyards and distributing the bottles globally.
They reportedly earned €2 million from the scheme. French prosecutors charged one suspect with organized fraud and money laundering. Europol's raids uncovered counterfeit Grand Cru bottles, wine re-labelling equipment, luxury goods and over €100,000 in cash.
