UK pubs and bars exempt from outdoor smoking ban
In response to industry concerns, the UK government has this week confirmed (5 November 2025) that hospitality venues, including pub and bar outdoor areas, will be exempt from new smoking restrictions. This decision, part of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, was welcomed by UKHospitality, which feared potential impacts on trade.
The bill focuses on creating a smoke-free generation, limiting tobacco access for younger age groups and enforcing bans in specific outdoor areas, such as schools and hospital grounds, to protect public health. Kate Nicholls, UKHospitality’s chief executive, expressed relief, noting businesses' concerns over added costs. “The government’s decision recognises our sector’s unique pressures” she said.
Beyond smoking, the bill also restricts vape advertising and introduces a 2025 ban on disposable vapes, addressing environmental and health issues. As the bill moves through Parliament, the hospitality sector views this exemption as a positive response to its calls for regulatory balance.
