Old grapevines gets global definition

The International Organisation of Vine & Wine (OIV) has defined 'old grapevines' and 'old vineyards' with standards that could shape global vine preservation. The definitions recognise vines aged 35 years or older and set guidelines for vineyard classification.

This historic move, developed with input from The Old Vine Conference, The Old Vine Project, The Old Vine Registry, and Italy’s Censimento Vecchie Vigne, sets the threshold for “old grapevine” at 35 years. An old vineyard is now defined as one with at least 85% of vines meeting this age criteria. If the vine has been re-grafted in the field, then then 35 years is required from the time of re-grafting.

Sarah Abbott MW of The Old Vine Conference hailed the resolution as a major milestone that could impact European regulations and aid in preserving global wine heritage. The Old Vine Conference will continue its work with next week’s Old Vine Wine Week and upcoming 2025 conference in California.
