Bottle Weight Accord gets heavyweight backing

Multinational wine producer Viña Concha y Toro has joined the Bottle Weight Accord, a global initiative to reduce wine packaging’s carbon footprint by limiting bottle weight. The brand aims to reduce its 750ml bottle weight to 420g or less by 2026.

Signed by global producers including Domaine Bousquet, the accord was established by the Sustainable Wine Roundtable (SWR) in 2023. Over 50% of wine’s carbon footprint comes from glass bottles, with global emissions from glass production reaching 95 million metric tons in 2022.

Viña Concha y Toro’s sustainability director, Valentina Lira, called the pledge “an important step,” noting the impact of backing from key global retailers. SWR director Dr Peter Stanbury praised the move, highlighting the brand’s leadership in South America’s wine sector. This commitment builds on Concha y Toro’s ongoing efforts to enhance sustainability across their portfolio, including brands like Casillero del Diablo from Chile, Trivento from Argentina, and Bonterra in California.
