Philglas & Swiggot to close after 34 years

London wine merchant Philglas & Swiggot will close on 16 March, citing rising duty costs and Brexit red tape as the final straw. Established in 1991, the business has been a cornerstone of the London’s independent wine scene, serving Londoners from its Battersea and Marylebone stores.

Over the years, Philglas & Swiggot adapted to changing markets, including a 2018 acquisition by Ireland’s O’Briens Wine. However, new UK duty rules—introducing 30 tax bands based on ABV have added administrative strain, while inflation and falling consumer demand have squeezed margins.

The company said it had been a joy to serve London’s wine lovers but acknowledged that current trading conditions were unsustainable. With wine becoming an increasingly costly luxury, many independent merchants may face a similar fate. Industry leaders warn that without a duty freeze or trade reform, more closures could be on the horizon.
