New Cru Bourgeois classification
The highly anticipated 2025 Cru Bourgeois classification was unveiled on earlier this month on the 10th February at Wine Paris, showcasing a refined selection of 170 estates — a notable drop from the 249 listed in 2020. This marks the second classification since its 2020 reboot, reaffirming the system’s commitment to quality and sustainability.
The updated ranking includes 14 Crus Bourgeois Exceptionnels, 36 Crus Bourgeois Supérieurs, and 120 Crus Bourgeois. The reduction in numbers reflects a stricter evaluation process, requiring higher environmental standards and a comprehensive assessment of wine quality over five vintages.
Several prominent estates opted out, continuing a trend of attrition from higher tiers. While the classification has solidified its reputation, questions remain about its ability to attract top-tier estates back into the fold. Time will tell if the 2030 reclassification sees any renewed participation from Médoc’s top producers.
