Italian wine exports to US stall over tariff fears
Italian wine exports to the US have ground to a halt amid fears that President Donald Trump may impose a 200% tariff on European wine and spirits.
Trade group Federvini reports that importers have suspended shipments, leaving 1 million bottles stuck at the port of Livorno.
The slowdown follows a surge in sparkling wine exports to the US in late 2024 as producers tried to get ahead of the potential tariffs. However, with uncertainty growing and US restaurants running out of stock, importers now fear unsellable stock at inflated prices.
Prosecco producers have appealed to Italian Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida to take urgent action at both national and EU levels. Despite Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s ties with Trump, it remains unclear whether Italy can secure exemptions from the looming tariffs, which could significantly impact the sector.
