Footballers' wines
Footballing legend Ronaldo was left stunned after his old Brazilian teammate, Vampeta, drank an £8,000 bottle of Petrus – served in plastic cups with ice.
Speaking on the Brazilian podcast Charla, Ronaldo explained that the prized bottle was never meant to be opened. “I bought it for its symbolic value as the most famous wine in the world,” he said. But Vampeta, unaware of its significance, casually poured it, complained it was warm, and added ice cubes before chugging it.
Ronaldo, who has acquired a taste for fine dining and luxury experiences during his career, was appalled to witness one of the world's finest wines treated like cheap plonk.
Vampeta, a former Brazilian international, played alongside Ronaldo at PSV Eindhoven and Inter Milan and today is a much-loved football pundit in Brazil. Petrus is a wine estate located in the Pomerol appellation next door to Saint-Émilion. They famously only make red wine, made from 100% Merlot and a typical bottle would set you back a few thousand pounds a bottle. Ice anyone?!
