Mexico gets first PGI for wine
Mexico has officially granted its first Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) for wine, recognising the Querétaro wine region. The move, made on 24 March 2025, is a significant milestone for Mexico's growing wine industry.
The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) has bestowed the coveted PGI status on the Querétaro region, located between the 20-21 degrees latitude. With vineyards spanning 550 hectares at an altitude of over 1,965 metres, Querétaro's unique climate offers both challenges and opportunity.
The region is celebrated for its extreme weather, with summer rains and cold night temperatures. The PGI will apply to red, white, rosé, sparkling and late-harvest wines, though no specific grape varieties are named. This recognition is a key moment in Mexico's bid to elevate its wine production on the global stage.
