2024 a record year for wine auctions

Wine auctions were buzzing in 2024, with a 17.7% jump in the number of bottles sold, according to the French Auction House, iDealwine in their latest Auction Barometer report. While volumes were up, the average price per bottle dipped slightly compared to 2023.

The 180-page report examines developments in the international wine auction market in 2024 and provides an outlook for 2025. It revealed that 261,465 bottles were auctioned last year, generating €39.1m in revenue, a 15% increase on 2023 and a record year. However, the average price fell to €149 per bottle. Burgundy maintained its premium status at €250.20, while Beaujolais offered more affordable wines at €44.20. Spanish, Italian and US wines saw prices decline, while wines from the Rest of the World climbed 14% to €83.90/bottle.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) remained the market’s jewel in the crown, with 639 bottles auctioned, averaging €4,142 each, including the year’s top lot: 12 bottles from 1999 sold for €62,375.
