Duty increase in UK budget 2012
George Osborne announced the continuation of the alcohol duty escalator in today’s Budget - meaning alcohol duty rises by 2% ahead of inflation. The implications for wine are as follows:-
Prices:-
Still wine not exceeding 15% abv was £1.81 duty per 75cl bottle but now the government will be taking £1.90 (up 9p)
Fortified wine 15%-22% ABV was £2.41 per 75cl bottle now £2.53 (up 12p)
Sparkling wine was £2.32 per 75cl bottle now £2.43 (up 12p)
Spirits 40% alcohol up 38p per 70cl bottle
The new duty rate per 6 x 75cl are as follows:-
Still wine not exceeding 15% abv = £11.40
Fortified wine 15%-22% = £15.20
Sparkling wine = £14.61
This tax hike comes despite inflation already pushing up the price of alcohol.
