German Grüner Veltliner beats Austria in blind tasting

The best Grüner Veltliner is German according to a comparative blind tasting of the varietal which was hosted in Vienna, Austria. The tasting is the first in a series of tastings called 'Generation Grüner' to be held across the world and the winning wine, Weingut Weegmüller’s ‘Vom Balkon der Pfalz’ 2011, was up against Gruner Veltliners from Austria, New Zealand, the Czech Republic, the US, Germany, Slovakia, Hungary, Italy and Australia and Argentina.

Organiser Laurenz Maria Moser said the tasting would help them to evaluate the different styles of Grüner produced around the world and find out what might exist beyond the traditional Austrian styles.
