Kwazulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal is a geographical unit in South Africa’s Wine of Origin scheme. It stretches from Greytown to Oribi Flats and the Midlands. Altitudes are up to 1,500 metres in the eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal and the climate is moderated by the Drakensberg Mountains. However, it really is very early days for this area in terms of winemaking but there are promising indications.

As of 2012, there are only two wineries: Abingdon and Highgate. Abingdon Estate, in the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains, in Lion’s River, first planted grapes in 2004 and varieties now include Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Chardonnay grown on the Clovelly and Griffon soils, which have good drainage.

Highgate Wine Estate, also in Lion’s River, planted its first vines in 2005. Its main varieties are Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

There are no regions, districts or wards designated within this geographical unit.
