Grafting and Phylloxera with Prof Ernst Ruhl from Geisenheim
We ask Professor Ernst Ruhl from the Geisenheim Grape Breeding Institute to explain how phylloxera attacks the grape vine and the importance of grafting not just to deal with phylloxera but how to improve the vine in general
Ernst explains how phylloxera, an aphid, feeds on both leaves and the roots of grape vines exclusively. It's the aphid's ability to feed on the roots that is the problem and causes the vines to suffer water and nutrient deficiencies which weaken the plant until the roots and plant eventually dies. We hear about the life cycle of phylloxera above and below the ground and the conditions in which it thrives.
I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
