16: Spotlight on Pinot Gris

Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio are essentially the same grape variety but in terms of wine style, Pinot Gris is a richer wine with more body, Pinot Grigio tends to be a lighter style. Chris likens them to Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde of the grape world!

Chris talks about the wine making options, the countries and regions where Pinot Gris is grown and the styles it produces. The main region is Alsace in eastern France at the foothills of the Vosges mountains which mean it is quite sunny, cloud free and has dry autumns. The other main growing region for the grape, where it is known as Pinot Grigio, is the Veneto region in North East Italy where it is picked early and made in an unoaked simple style. Often cropped at high yields producing modestly-priced wines. There are areas in Italy producing premium high quality wines such as the alpine regions of Alto Adige and Trentino.

Pinot Gris is also grown in Germany (known as Grauburgunder) and New Zealand.

Our clients say...

I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
