D1: Vineyard Establishment: Background: Planting a vineyard in England with Cameron Roucher
On this weeks show we are talking with kiwi viticulturist Cameron Roucher. Cameron is the viticulturists at the recently planted Rathfinny Estate in Southern England close the the coast. We discuss viticulture issues that need to be considered when planting a vineyard such as about row spacing, orientations, seaweed fertiliser as well as whether Organics is viable for a large vineyard such as Rathfinny.
Cameron grew up in Manawatu, New Zealand and studied viticulture and winemaking at the Eastern Institute of Technology at Taradale. He then spent eight years at Morton Estate in Hawkes Bay, gaining experience in vineyard, nursery, winery and
cellaring operations.
Following a period with Casella Wines the people behind (Yellow tail) in Australia, Cameron returned to Hawkes Bay to join the Dolbel Estate team and also manage the super–premium Two Gates Vineyard.
In June 2008 Cameron was named the Hawkes Bay Young Viticulturist of the Year and runner-up in the national competition. He brings experience, knowledge and essential management skills in the area of vineyard management and production to Rathfinny.
