D3: Germany: Background: Weingut Adelmann the region of Wurttemberg and the key grape varieties
Felix Graf Adelmann of Weingut Adelmann talks to us about the region of Wurttemberg in the south of Germany, bordering Baden and only 20km from Stuttgart. There are 10,000 hectares of vines making Wurttemberg the 4th biggest region in Germany. 83% of production is from co-ops and the 15 top estates account for only 300 hectares. Amazingly 47% of wine sales in Germany are through Aldi and Lidl and the average bottle price is 2 euros. About 70% of the vines grown in Württemberg are red grape varieties and the most common variety and the region's signature grape is Trollinger. The other important red grape is Lemberger which is the same as Austria's Blaufränkisch. Riesling is the most popular white variety.
I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
