D3: Austria: Background: Willi Klinger on Austria Part 2
Willi Klinger represents the Austrian Wine Marketing board. In this second interview we talk about grape varieties such as St Laurent and Autria's sweet wines (described as 'liquid gold') as well as the wine regions of Austria which are mainly located to the East. 4 out of the 9 federal states of Austria produce wine, these are Lower Austria, Burgenland, Vienna and Styria. Willi tells us about the grapes and wine styles of each region and how each region has DACs (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) which are contolled appellations which can only grow certain grape varieties. If other grapes are grown they have to be labelled with the generic region.
I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
