D3: Madeira: Background: Madeira with Geoffrey Cole and Luis Oliveira
Find out all about Madeira wine in this interview with famous producer D'Oliveira Vinhos who are best known for their old vintages. Madeira is a small Portuguese island located in the Atlantic ocean 700 miles off the North African coast with a population of 270,000 people. They've been producing fortified wine for over 200 years, when the wine went on long sea voyages to the West Indies and back, and was found to improve after the time it spent in warm barrels through tropical climates. These days the wine goes through a process of estufagem ageing with artificially speeds up the ageing in warm vats heated to 40 degrees for about 3 months. It's then left to age in barrels for 3 or more years. We also hear about the grape varieties used which include Verdelho, Sercial, Terrantez, Bastardo and Malmsey (the English name for the grape Malvasia).
I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
