D3: Alsace: Background: Philippe Zinck on Alsace
Philippe Zinck heads up Paul Zinck vineyards in Alsace. He talks to us about the history and the wines of this famous French wine region.
The Paul Zinck winery was first established in 1964 at Eguisheim in Alsace with 2.5 hectares planted which has since grown to 30 hectares. But wine growing in Alsace, located on France’s eastern border with Germany, took over from farming a decade earlier after the Second World War, when families were able to focus on viticulture and establish vineyards after years of switching between German and French rule. They planted mainly Riesling and Gewürztraminer and today 80% of the wines are white, with 6 white grapes allowed in the appellation and only 1 red grape, Pinot Noir. The region is also known for its sparkling variant Cremant d’Alsace. Phillippe fills us in on the history, the climate and the geography as well as the development of the Alsace Grand Cru appellation in 1972 and the challenges that climate change could bring to creating the typically dry Alsation style of wine.
