D3: USA: Bacakground: Washington State Wines with Glen Yaffa and Mike Coveney
Glen Yaffa is from Chateau Ste. Michelle in Columbia Valley in East Washington and Mike Coveney from Hilltop wines represents Washington wineries in the UK. The region has a continental climate with low rainfall and free-draining sandy soils. It is on the same latitudes as Bordeaux and Burgundy and has a long growing season with a later harvest than California. From an export point of view the focus is on Merlot, Riesling and Syrah. Other grapes that grow well are Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.
Washington State has 15,000 hectares (smaller than Napa Valley) but as a US wine growing state is second to California.
I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
