D3: Germany: Background: Goldtroepfchen with Johann Haart and Manfred Breit
Johann Haart and Manfred Breit are vineyard owners in Goldtroepfchen in the Mosel. We find out about the area and why it is so unique.
Goldtroepfchen is an area in Piesport and one of best wine areas in the Mosel. The vineyard area is a bit like an amphitheatre, very sheltered with steep slopes. It has slate soils which give a fine mineral character to the wines. The single vineyard is divided between 200 people, all small family businesses with homes in the vineyard. You need an average of 5-6 hectares to make a living.
They have mild winters and hot summers with temperatures in the 30's. The slate heats up to 50 degrees during the day and gives off heat at night time. The vineyard is located near the Mosel river reflecting sunshine onto the vines.
3 ways of trellising. double goyot, heart shape and round wheel.
The heart shape is traditional but not used so much today. The new wheel system is a new idea - a single post system which you can work easily and achieves a better balance between the fruit and the leaves.
