D3: Australia: Background: Philip Shaw on the Orange Wine Region
Philip Shaw has been making wine in Australia for more than 4 decades and has his own vineyard in Orange, just west of Sydney. Philip tells us about the region and the wines he is producing.
The Orange wine region is at 600 metres altitude and higher, with grapes being grown between 750 and 1000 metres. It is a cool region with longer ripening and better flavour qualities in the wine and vibrant fruit characters. The soils are mainly limestone with a red top soil of windblown soil from central Australia and red, friable soil (soil that crumbles easily) below. Philip's favourite varieties are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir but he has planted other varieties to see what works best. Pinot is showing huge promise as are Chardonnay and Shiraz. There are 50 growers in the Orange region and 15 wineries. The biggest is 500 hectares.
I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
