D3: Spotlight: WSET Level 4 D3 Theory Exam with Lauren Denyer
Lauren talks us through the Unit D3 exam which covers Wines of the World. The WSET School in London does recommend that you sit this after you have completed the other units as it brings much of the knowledge from the other units together.
D3 must be taken after the D1 and D2 exams. The D3 exam lasts over 3 hours with a 2 hour exam followed by an 80 minute exam. Paper 1 has 4 questions of which you need to choose 3 to answer, with 40 minutes per question. After a break you have Paper 2 with 3 questions of which you must answer 2 (again 40 mins each). Overall, you need a mark of 55% to pass but it doesn't need to be 55% on every question.
Wine production and the business of wine crop up in the D3 and so it is good to revise these ahead of the D3 exam and think about how they link with the classic regions. Crucial to know the classic regions and the main soil types/climate in relation to those. Less vital are producers and vintage specific information. Plan your answer at the start of each question before immediately starting to write, thinking about the structure if you can, as well as the content.
