D0: Spotlight: WSET Level 4 Theory Exams Overview with Lauren Denyer
Lauren Denyer is a Level 4 tutor at the WSET School in London Bridge. In this episode we cover how to tackle the L4 Diploma theory exams for units D1, D2, D3 and D4/D5.
Failure is usually due to lack of relevant content and poor time management. To manage your time follow the guidelines set out by the WSET. Questions are given a weighting out of 100, so spend your time in proportion to the weighting of the marks.
D1 exam is 1 hr 30 mins (Wine Production)
D2 exam is 1 hr (Wine Business)
D3 exam allow 40 mins per question (Wines of the World)
D4 & D5 combined: 45 mins for tasting and 45 mins for theory (Sparkling & Fortified)
In approaching questions, focus on what they are asking and don't go off topic. Plan your answer, decide the structure, highlight the command verbs (e.g. Explain, Account for, Describe). Plot what you are going to include and make sure you don't include anything that isn't necessary or asked for.
I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
