D1: Hazards, Pets, Disease: Background: Phylloxera with Drew Noon MW and Rachel Williams

Rachel Williams is an engagement officer at the McLaren Vale Grape Wine and Tourism Association and Drew Noon MW is a winemaker, now working at his family vineyard Noon Vineyards. Phylloxera is an insect which lives in the soil and feeds on the vine's roots, killing the vine. It came from America into Europe in the late 19th century, devastating vineyards, particularly in France. It is not currently present in South Australia although there have been several incidents elsewhere in the country, e.g. Yarra Valley in Victoria. We talk about how Australia manages its bio security to keep phylloxera at bay with the risk of tourists unwittingly bringing it from one wine region to another, for example from soil on their shoes. Different regions are categorized on their phylloxera status and there are strict rules in place for the wine industry when moving grapes etc. between states/regions.

Our clients say...

I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
