ThirtyFifty - Hens

D3: South West France: Background: Bergerac with Richard Lane

Richard took a gap year (career break) in France with his wife and they chose to live in Bergerac being quite rural, with historical interest, warm climate, good food and of course wine. The region is located beside the Dordogne river, 80 miles east of Bordeaux, 90 miles upstream. In Bergerac there is so much variety in the region in terms of wine styles with whites, dry rose, reds and sweet wines. With 9000 hectares of vineyards, Merlot is the dominant red grape and the soils are mostly clay and limestone. The basic red is the ordinary Merlot dominated Bergerac Rouge, very similar to Bordeaux Rouge, but they also grow Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. With whites, Muscadelle is grown which is the grape used in the famous Monbazillac appellation producing sweet wines. Also of note is the local Bergerac medium dry white (slightly sweet) 'Moelleux' which comes from the tiny appellation of Rosette.

Our clients say...

I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
