D3: Italy Central South: Background: Alberto Tasca d Almerita on the native grapes of Sicily
Alberto Tasca d'Almerita talks to us about Sicily and the native grapes. Sicily is located in Mediterranean sea and is the biggest of Italy's islands. There is lots of diversity and different cultures/traditions in the people and in the wines. Sicily has more than 50 indigenous grape varieties but not all are in production, though they are experimenting with different varieties. Tasca's Regaleali estate was established in 1830 in an area at an altitude of 400-850m surrounded by mountains, protecting the vineyards from the sea. As well as wine, they also produce olive oil, tomatoes and keep sheep. We talk about Nero d'Avola and Perricone and they also grow Inzolia, Grillo, Cataratto among other native grapes and international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Chardonnay.
