D4: Background: Jacob Leadley from Black Chalk on English Sparkling Wine amd Pinot Meunier
Jacob Leadley is winemaker at Black Chalk, an English sparkling wine brand launched in May 2018. The two wines are produced in Hampshire in the South of England, based near to Winchester, at the end of the South Downs, famous for its chalk soils. Black Chalk was set up by Jacob and his family, after he and his wife were in New Zealand and came home in 2009 deciding they would start a wine business. Jacob studied at Plumpton College for two years and then began working at Hattingley Valley, where he still works now in 2018.
Black Chalk is a separate project to Hattingley but the wines are made at the Hattingley Valley winery. The grapes are sourced from several vineyards in Hampshire and Jacob blends and makes the wines himself. The first vintage is 2015, bottled in March 2016. The Classic is a blend of Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with a heavier proportion of Pinot Meunier to give weight and purity of fruit. The Black Chalk Wild Rose has 50% Pinot Meunier with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. More details at www.blackchalkwine.co.uk
