D3: Spain: Background: Caroline Dessort on Yecla and Jumilla appellations of Spain
Caroline Dessort talks to us about two wine regions in the South East of Spain - Yecla and Jumilla. Yecla is a small coastal town near Alicante and an appellation within the Murcia region. Surrounded by hills, the vineyards are higher up at 800-900 metres. The main grape variety is Monastrell (Spanish name for Mourvedre) although there are some white wines. We talk about the climate, soils and vines (all bush vines) harvest end of August until mid October. The wines are often blends using Monastrell blended with riper Syrah, Merlot and Petit Verdot to soften out the (grumpy!) tannins.
Jumilla is another appellation in Murcia located in the mountains producing larger volumes of wine for bulk exports and the third appellation is Bullas.
I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
