D3: South Africa: Background: Edwin Doran of Doran Vineyards on South Africa
Irish-born Edwin Doran came to London in 1966 and in 1974 set up his own travel business which he sold in 2008. In 2010 Edwin changed tack and bought a boutique South African vineyard. He has 55 hectares of vines, 2 dams and a small sheep farm. The droughts over the past 4 years have adversely affected their crop (tonnage is down 45% over the period). This year they had 40% of the annual average rainfall, which means they are having to buy extra water from the council to fill their dam.
The vineyard is located in Paarl in the Voor-Paardeberg region. The grapes are grown on bush vines with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Pinotage and Grenache Noir as well as three white grapes. They sell in the UK through a number of channels as well as in Ireland, Denmark, Switzerland and the US.
I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
