D3: Loire: Background: Bourgueil with Kathleen Van den Berghe from Chateau de Miniere
Bourgueil is in middle of Loire Valley, near to Vouvray and Anjou. The only grape variety permitted is Cabernet Franc. The sloping vineyards are on limestone which gives acidity and structure, but by the river the sub-soils are mainly gravel and sand - very fine and light, creating a lighter style of wine. They are an organic producers and have very old vines on 29 hectares.
Kathleen and her husband purchased the Chateau in 2010. They were looking for a holiday home and in their search found a vineyard. Kathleen is now an MW student and runs the vineyard full-time but still lives in Belgium. Its a 4.5-5 hour drive from Brussels via Paris, so Kathleen spends time in both Belgium and France.
The estate is open to visitors all year round and people can stay over, booking via Airbnb. For details visit www.chateaudeminiere.com
