D1: Hazards, Pets, Disease: Background: Murray Barlow on South Africa and Leaf Roll Virus
Rustenberg wines based in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Murray tells us about the region and the growing trend for wine tourism in the area, Rustenberg has a tasting room which is open 7 days a week around with around 16,000 visitors a year. We talk about the climate and the cooling influence of the Atlantic ocean during the day and night. We also discuss leaf roll virus which is spread by insects and causes the leaves to turn a burgundy red colour, meaning the vines cant photosynthesize and ripen the fruit. The only solution is to grub up the vine and re-plant. Rustenberg had to replant their vineyards in late 1990s to be 100% clean and so today only have 2 or 3% of vines affected. Its an ongoing process to monitor the vines for the virus and prevent it from spreading.
I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
