D3: Australia: Background: A brief history of modern Australian wines with Geoff Merrill
Geoff Merrill is an Australian winemaker based in McLaren Vale in South Australia. Geoff gives us a brief history of his 50 year career in wine and the Australian wine scene. In 1970, Geoff joined Seppelt as an apprentice winemaker to embark on intensive training in the lab and winery, rather than accept a place at the prestigious Roseworthy College to study oenology. In 1974 he worked in Stellenbosch as a winemaker then in 1975, he joined Chateau Reynella, then owned by Rothmans but later bought by Hardy's in 1982. While working at Reynella, Geoff began to make wines under his own name, then left Hardy’s in 1988 to concentrate on his own winemaking venture at his Mount Hurtle Winery.
I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
