D1: Canopy Management: Background: Trellising and pruning with Gareth King from Felton Road
Gareth explains how the Felton Road vineyards are trellised - the vines are positioned on the trellis so that the shoots grow vertically (vertical shoot positioning or VSP). We also discuss pruning techniques - they use a combination of spur and cane pruning - and how selecting different methods can even out their labour requirements throughout the year, giving families regular work from season to season.
Gareth talks about the contrast in temperature from day to evening (diurnal temperature) and how this can work in the vineyard's favour, (hot days, cool nights) but also bring challenges. The diurnal temperature range (DTR) is the difference between the daily maximum and minimum temperature.
I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
