D3: Bordeaux: Background: Chateau Palmer with Chris Myers on the 1855 Classification and En Primeur

Chris Myers is the export director for Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Lorenzo Pasquini is an assistant winemaker. In this first interview we chat to Chris about the history of Chateau Palmer.

The estate originally belonged to a French family but was sold to Colonel Charles Palmer in 1814. In 1843 he went bankrupt and Chateau Palmer was bought by the Pereire brothers in 1853, 2 years before the 1855 classification. In 1938 the Ginestet family, the Miailhe family, the Mahler-Besse family and the Sichel family joined together to buy Chateau Palmer but today it is in the hands of the Sichels and the Mahler-Besse family.

We talk about the 1855 Bordeaux classification (Palmer is classed as a third growth) and we also discuss the En Primeur (futures) market and the practice of selling wine through negociants.v

Our clients say...

I thought the questions were excellent, an extremely valuable revision tool. They really helped highlight areas I thought I had revised and understood but clearly had not, which has enabled me to focus on key areas to revisit and study before going into the exam... I think it is a great resource and an essential revision aid for any WSET 3 students wishing to gain a competitive edge and successfully pass the WSET 3 exam.
