Smoke from California and Oregon fires means many grapes will go unpicked.

The Glass Fire that has destroyed 18 wineries in California so far is the tip of the iceberg, with many producers planning to not pick grapes because of smoke taint.

Earlier this week the Glass Fire was 41% contained. But the fires raging across the West coast of America are affecting regions as far north as Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Jason Hanson of Hanson Vineyards expects his crews may only harvest five tons of grapes, down from at least 25 tons last year, due to smoke taint from nearby fires.

The true impact on a $70 billion-a-year national industry centred in California, Oregon and Washington State will not be known for months as the wildfire season is not yet over. More than 8,300 fires have burned well over 4 million acres in California since the start of the year, according to the state’s wildfire monitoring division.
